Generally, you'll want to avoid harsh chemicals or solvents. I would start by running several pots of just plain distilled water, this should remove most of the gunk. Then, I would run a combination of 1 drop of dish soap along with the water. Once that's run through, then run several pots of distilled water again.

Depending on the type of coffee maker this is an easy job. Percolator types can go into a dishwasher and can have mineral deposits removed by acids. When I determine that there are too many oils and minerals on mine for the dishwasher to handle, I place it in a crock pot with vinegar and simmer on low overnight.

A good thing I use would be a tooth brush to get into the small places. Also for the other parts you could use a sponge and wipe it down to get a good clean look try leaving it in the water for a while. If you cant take it apart don't do this it will ruin it.

You can put vinager in it to clean it out. Let the viager drip out of the the coffee maker into the coffee maker cup. That should clean it out well.
