You should seal your driveway every 2-4 years, but on new driveways you need to wait at least 6-9 months to let it cure. You should use a high-quality coal-tar based sealer and you should only seal the driveway when either the original black asphalt has worn off or the first coat of sealer has worn off.

Taking into consideration durability, coal tar sealers is more preferable than the asphalt-based sealers. The former is more resistant to oil and gasoline which is a solvent of asphalt.
