What is the basic principles of simplifying a polynomial?

I need to principles of simplifying a polynomial so that I can explain it to my children.

Simplifying polynomials is just gathering like terms to be counted. It's like dividing fruit into apples, oranges and kiwi. (x+2)*(x+3) = x squared+5x+6 the x's, x2 and numbers are grouped.

It is very simple to simplify a polynomial. Basically all you need to do is first combine all of the like terms. Then you must perform the actions (i. e. multiplication/subtraction) of those like terms until you are left with the unlike terms.
