The cake itself is a baking soda leavened scone-like cake, usually shaped like a cup or bowl. Strawberry shortcake is a dessert made with one of those cakes topped with sliced strawberries, a mix of strawberry juice and sugar, and whipped cream. Sometimes the scone is replaced with sponge cake.

It is another name for angel food cake. It is very sweet and fluffy cake. You can either make it or buy it.
