Process scheduling is used by multitasking operating systems such as Windows, OSX, and Linux. It is a low level(kernel space) way for the operating system to delegate processor time to various processes running on your system. This allows for efficient sharing of computer resources that runs in the background. It also gives the illusion of true concurrent processing.

Process scheduling is a primary function of a multi-tasking operating system such Unix and Unix-derived platforms such as Linux, and Mac OSX, as well as newer versions of Windows. Process scheduling is the method by which the operating system prioritizes how often processes (applications) are granted use of the CPU, and for how long. This is to ensure smooth operation.

Process scheduling is done by configuring a process explorer to execute tasks regularly or just once at a certain time in the future. The specific process depends upon the operating system installed, the process to be scheduled, and the task to be performed. Windows relies on two mechanisms for this: Schedule Tasks and Process Manager.
