These dogs are very exciteable, so it is adviseable to limit the level of exciting play with them. The murmurs are caused by "holes" next to the right ventricle.

They are usually treated with medications in the form of a pill. Depending on the severity of the murmur sometimes the dog is just left alone and the condition is closely monitored by a veterinarian. Surgery is rather rarely performed for this condition.

A heart murmer in a young Pom will generally have a good prognosis. In older dogs the problem is a greater concern. Your vet can offer medication to assist the inefficient heart. Many dogs are diagnosed with heart murmers and have long, active lives but good treatment is the key.

It depends on whether it is symptomatic (causing other problems) or asymptomatic (not causing other problems). If it is causing other problems such as shortness of breath or fatique, your vet may be able to correct it with surgery. If it is not causing problems, no treatment is needed.

If the dog is a puppy, it may get over the problem without needing any treatment. However, if your vet has decided that you will need to do something about the issue, he may be able to do surgery to treat the underlying cause of the murmur.

It depends on the grade of the heart murmur. Sometimes murmurs can correct themselves, especially if the dog is young and the murmur isn't that bad. Other times surgery is necessary.

Heart murmurs can occur in any breed of dog. Certain breeds do have a higher risk for a specific ailment than other breeds. It is best to check with your veterinarian or check this out in breed specific information on health issues.
