The cancer originated and was localized in one part of the body--the colon. After a while, some colon cancer cells traveled, mostly likely via the blood stream, away from the colon and landed elsewhere in some other organs, took hold, and started to multiply. Colon cancer cells can now be found in the liver, the lungs, the brain, etc. It has metastasized.

If they tell you cancer has metastasized it usually means that the cancer has spread to other parts of the body.

Metastasized means it has spread beyond the colon. Often cancers will spread via the lymph nodes to other areas and it becomes much more difficult to treat.

It means that the cancer started in the colon and has spread to various other organs. My mother was diagnosed with metastatic gall bladder cancer. Her cancer started in the gallbladder and moved to the liver.
