What is machismo?

I always thought machismo had to do with men who have way too much pride in their masculinity and/or their virility. Seems to me that a lot of men who have "machismo" also haven't grown up and taken responsibility in their actions and don't treat women well.

It derives from Spanish and Portuguese culture which traditionally regarded men as being superior to women. In modern times it refers to ultra masculine behaviour which is generally unfavourable and oppressive to women, leading sometimes even to excessive behaviour and even violence.

Quite a few cultures consider machismo to be an asset. Examples of this are military dictators because they tend to be bold, authoritarian and they are prone to violence to get their way. Extreme aggression is often confused with machismo which really gives the word a bad name in history.

The definition of machismo is there is an exaggerated sense of masculinity including traits such aggressiveness, virility, physical courage, domination of women or a stronger than normal sense of strength and toughness. Male chauvinism is also a sign of machismo. Many people think of Italian men as having strong machismo.

Aren't machismo and macho basically the same thing just different words? Macho men tend to be chauvinistic also.  add a comment

Machismo is a term that only applies to men. It is a type of magnetism - a force that draws women to men. Men who exhibit "machismo" are confident and manly.
