This would be hard to diagnose but recurrent and intermittant periods of constipation and diarrhea would be the easiest way to tell.

Pets with bowel conditions will have off and on constipation and diarrhea. Often times you will notice traces of mucus or blood in the stool also. Depending on the foods the animal eats the bowels will become irritated and bathroom habits will be inconsistent. Stress is generally a factor in this condition.

These are the symptoms a dog with IBS may display: Stomach bloating, passing gas excessively, diarrhea or soft stool, increased frequency of defecating but passage of small volumes of stool, straining to defecate and vomiting. Some of these signs may be intermittent, so you definitely need to keep an eye out.

If your dog has had an upset stomach for several weeks or months it may have IBS. Consult your veterinarian for medication or change in diet advice.
