What is generic, just plays music, mp3 player?

Well for a good player that is strictly for music I would recommend something like a Samsung yp-u1 or a Sansa clip. Both a small player that have simply screen designed for navigating music file. They are not complicated and offer better construction then cheaper alternatives.

I've seen the iPod Shuffle around on the cheap now. It's not generic, but all you do is load music, and all it does is shuffle it.
