It is using the compression of the engine as a way to stop forward motion. Anytime you let off the gas and the vehicle slows down much of this is due to natural engine braking. Big rigs and other large motors actually control the amount of pressure in the cylinders and use the engine to brake.

Engine braking is downshifting to a lower gear to slow down. The act of downshifting increases the engine RPMs and allows the vehicle to slow down without using the brakes.

Engine braking is when you put the transmission in a lower gear to use the resistance of the engine to slow your vehicle. This is usually done when going down long hills to avoid overheating the breaks. While this does help save your brakes, it can be harmful to your engine and transmission if overused.

Engine braking refer to the ability of an engine to keep a vehicle restrained. This is occurs when no brakes are applied and the friction of the engine internals and the combustion in the cylinder holds the car back. The engine speed combined with a low gear ratio cause the a steady speed not letting the car go faster.
