It is a system of reducing noise in recordings used by the company DBX. It works by companding, which means compressing the sounds on recording and expanding them on playback. This "mixes them up", and spreads them around, making them less noticeable.

DBX is just the scientific abbreviation for decibel. Decibel is a unit of meaurement of sound. Normal human conversation is about 60 db, a jet is 180 db.

It is how they compress the quiet spots in a recording and turn it up so the whole recording can be equal.
