Channel setting means the gemstones are set in a channel without any metal or prongs between the stones. The gemstones are in a continuous row. Channel settings are extremely popular in engagement rings and are sturdier than settings where the stone sits up high. The channel protects the gemstones from being knocked lose.

In a channel setting, small, round diamonds or other gemstones are set in a row held together by a top and bottom band of metal. Typically, channel settings are used to accentuate a center solitaire, but it is possible to have a ring made entirely out of one or more channel set stones.
