A rotten egg odor from a hot water tank could be caused by a natural gas leak. This is very serious. You must immediately leave the house and contact your gas company. Do not use the phone in the home as it could create a spark, with tragic results. This is an emergency. Get it checked immediately.

Usually that rotten egg smell is caused from propane, so it's probable that you have a propane leak in the hot water heater somewhere. Have a propane guy come out and test it, he'll be able to tell you what's going on and where the leak is.

A buildup of sulfur in the water can cause the rotten egg odor from a hot water tank. You should have your water tested and the tank cleaned out. You may need a water filtration system.

It could be caused by bacteria in the tank sediment creating a hydrogen gas if that gas doesn't exist in the water to begin with.

The smell would be very bad. Nobody can inhale bad smells. If inhaled the effects are like vomiting, headache and not even able to eat food after that. It would take some moments to recover good mood. For example:- inhaling good smells, listening to musics etc. Nobody likes bad smells.
