It is sort of like a mushroom, and lives on mulch, or rotting wood. It's been known to attach itself to siding and cars, or whatever is close enough to it. It's not dangerous for pets, or for your home or car.

It is a plant disease also known as shotgun fungus. It breeds in rotting wood chip mulch, with mushrooms that give off spores as far as twenty feet. The spores are dark brown or black spots usually found on surfaces like house siding. It is almost impossible to remove.

Artillery fungus, also known as "shotgun", are a group of fungi from the genus Sphaerobolus. These fungi colonize dung or other organic matter, such as wood mulch, wood benches, wood sheds, etc. There, their mature spore masses are seen as stubborn mysterious black specs that are seemingly impossible to remove.
