It is something often used in a furnace or heater. It is something that is connected to be cooled or heated. For example if its used on a gas furnace and the pilot lite goes out then it would shut down the main gas line. If a pilot lite keeps going out thats when you need to replace one.

This device is usually used in a gas furnace. It is basically a switch. When it is hot the switch is open and gas can flow. Its purpose is to prevent you're house from filling with gas if the pilot light goes out. It should be installed by someone who is competent at such things.

It all depends on what kind of equiptment you are hooking it up on. If it is a furnce or a hot water heater the thermal coupler helps keep the pilot light lit.
