In cooking it's the amount of spice you can hold between your index finger and thumb. In music it's one breath full of notes. In a letter from your mother-in-law, it's the salutation. In gossip it's the person's name and the part of the body affected. In prayer it's the words "Dear God!"

The answer to this question depends largely on the context in which you're speaking. Most generally, however, a snippet is a smaller piece of data used to quickly and easily construct a larger piece of data. Computer code is a good example. In this context, it would be a piece of code used to construct a larger body of code.

A snippet is a small portion or fragment of a larger body. A tangible snippet might be a sentence or paragraph from a document, or a section of an audio recording. Almost anything that has been 'snipped' from something larger, may be referred to as a snippet.

the word "snippet" is used in all sorts of contexts. a little swatch of cloth might be called a "snippet" by a quilter. a programmer calls a little bit of code a "snippet" too. it really just means a small piece of something usually snipped from a larger piece.
