A presentence investigation gives the judge some background information about the defendant so he can make a decision on the sentence within the guidelines. Your nephew should be as forthcoming as possible as it can only work in his favor.

The probation department will conduct an interview of your Nephew and review all relevant information in order to make a recommendation to the Judge as to whether he is or is not a good candidate for probation and the terms of the probation. This can include drug testing.
