Generally, a motion to extend is paperwork that is filed with the court either by somebody representing themselves pro se, or by a person's attorney if they have retained one on their case. The motion asks the judge's permission to change (extend) the date of the hearing, settlement conference, or any other appointment set through the court.

A motion to extend is a paper filed with a court of competent jurisdiction seeking a longer period of time within which an order will be effective or during which another act may or must occur. For example, you can move to extend the time for filing an answer to a complaint or to extend the period of an injunction.
