It is a play on words (on the Russian word SPUTNIK) used by American newspapers as a joke towards the Russian space program's satellites.

The term kaputnik is used to describe someone who inadvertently wreaks destruction, who is clumsy, or turns happy situations into arguments or spats. Kaput is a German or Yiddish word meaning "dead" or "broken", "-nik" is from slavic roots and can be translated as "companion" or "follower" - so someone who breaks things.
