I've had two brother in laws who have become firefighters. A lot of the exercises they did wasn't so much weight training as it was actually doing what was going to be on the program. They ran a lot but with things like weight vests and carried dummies. In terms of weights build yourself so you can carry a lot.

Certainly a weight program is beneficial along with stretching. Do not neglect your cardio. I've seen too many firemen come on the job with tremendous strength only to last 5 minutes at a fire before losing their wind. Find an interval cardio routine and change it up every two months.

P90X is a great workout, it involves a muscle confusion by doing a different work out every day which allows you to gain muscle very quickly in 90 days.

Bench press, as you need very good upper body strength, along with pull-ups, and anything exercise in regardings to pulling or dragging. Squats would also be a big benefit, as part of the exam will require you to run with a certain amount of weight on your back. In addition, back exercises would help you.

If you want to become a firefighter just work out in the gym 3 or 4 days a week with a good workout routine depending on your body type.
