Hi-hat setup is individual to every drummer and is also influenced by how many hi-hats you use in your setup. Using the one standard hi-hat, it is usually the left most instrument in the drum kit, next to the snare drum.

A good hi-hat setup would be either Yamaha or Pearl. You generally want one that's relatively new, because there are a number of moving parts which degrade over time. Go to a local guitar shop and try out a few and see which one works best with your feet and pedal style.

Personal Preference - There is no right or wrong way of set-up. Most drummers set them slightly raised higher than, and just behind the snare drum.

If it is your first time... try adding it with your other beat... once you get comfortable try it with a different beat... Practice is the best way
