A glucose solution is simply saline (salt water that has been sterilized) with enough sugar dissolved in the water so the solution is isotonic. Getting an IV is usually standard procedure for any patient in the hospital. They are given to hydrate the patient, provide a small source of calories, and for easy access to administer other drugs.

Glucose solution is prepared by mixing standard amount of glucose in water which can be used for those who are unable to take food orally to maintain blood glucose levels.
