SSRIs(Selective Serotonin Reuptake Inhibitors) are commonly prescribed to treat depression, anxiety, and social phobias. They generally take awhile to build up in your system and it can be months before they are effective. With sudden symptoms like panic attacks, benzodiazepines may be more appropriate; check with your doctor or psychiatrist.

The best long term treatment is therapy that helps you deal with the situations that cause your panic attacks. Try deep breathing, changing your thoughts, taking a friend with you.

Benzodiazepines (such as xanax) may be more appropriate for panic attacks than an SSIR (such as zoloft) -- Medications work differently for everyone's brain chemistry.

After a thorough discussion of your symptoms, your physician has prescribed the best medication for you. It is better to believe that it will work and move forward from there. There are lots of medications today to help so there is no reason to continue to have issues with panic.

If an SSRI does not work for panic attacks, you should ask your doctor to prescribe something like Xanax, Valium, or Prozac. These medications do not effect your serotonin levels.

Medications alone don't often cure panic attacks. Panic attack are terrible. One feels as if they are going to die but they don't. Medication along with behavioral therapy needs to used to learn to control the attacks. Medication concerns should be directed to your psychiatrist.
