The thyroid gland produces hormones that regulate and keep your metabolism in balance. When the thyroid gland is partially or totally removed, one will experience an underactive thyroid or hypothyroidism, which will cause weight gain. To compensate for the loss of the thyroid gland, hormone replacement therapy will be prescribed for the rest of the patients life.

Hemithyroidectomy is linked to weight gain. The thyroid is an endocrine gland, and the hormones it releases help the body to regulate its metabolism. Taking synthetic thyroid hormones can help to mitigate weight gain.

Removal of half of the thyroid gland can cause you to gain weight easier, since the thyroid has a big impact on metabolism. You may notice this drop in metabolosim right after surgery.
