What does the saying that you can judge your success by what you had to give up mean?

It's a quid-pro-quo sort-of thing. Say you gain a new car and a swanky house, alienating your nearest and dearest in the process. You would be unhappy, and, therefore, not very successfulI. If you traded one thing for another, but what you got in return was not equal to what you gave up, the trade was not successful for you.

In order to succeed in anything one must work real hard. To do that one needs to give up certain things. Usually a successful business life may come at the cost of neglecting family.
