Originally, it was an abbreviation for 'Emotive Hardcore' which is a type of hardcore punk music that came onto the music scene in the 1980's. But today it has evolved to slang for 'Emotional' and a term of derision used for someone considered a 'wuss', and can also be used to refer to the related fashions and subculture.
