Hissing is the sound the sprinklers make as they water those well manicured greeneries, keeping the lawns green the song title may be a sort of gardening metaphor at least I have always thought of the sound as such. Or perhaps there are snakes in the lawn and the song is some sort of warning of broken serenity.

You have to look at the words and imagine a scene in your head first. When I do that, I see a lawn fighting back and being disapproved with its place in the world. Summer being the ultimate time to show this hissing to its owner or anyone who walks across this lawn.

Apart from it being the name of an album by Joni Mitchell, this phrase also has origin via the San Fernando Valley in California, where the city and suburbia lawns emit an essence in the dry heat.

I think the meaning to that would be the heat off grass. Like when to stare into the distance you see heat shimmering up from the ground, on a hot day or it can mean that you might have a snake in the lawn.
