The winters are beautiful; the summers are brutal and you never quite get used to it. It's a huge, spread-out and still fast-growing city, with the look and feel of suburbs, and most everybody has moved there recently. You absolutely need a car. Socially the population is an odd mix of conservative retirees, Mexican immigrants, the rich, and international tourists.

Phoenix, AZ is a large city, and it is gorgeous, but realize it gets VERY hot for several months during the summer. Keep yourself covered with light material, despite the temptation to wear less clothing due to the heat, use plenty of sunblock, and stock up on aloe (non-waterbased).
