You do not need a priest to officiate a marriage, you simply need someone certified by the state. A notary public can perform a marriage ceremony or one of your close friends can become certified to perform the service and file the marriage license so that you can have a ceremony tailored to your needs.

Before any priest will agree to marry you, he will require you to attend pre-marriage counceling. This is a good way to learn about the quality of a priest because you will be interacting with him for several weeks.

What you need to consider is your beliefs even if you don't go to church or what you would feel good about.
