Cholesterol is fat and it can be hazardous to our health, espeically when it clogs arteries, thus reducing blood flow. One type of cholesterol moves fat out of our system and to the liver where it is broken down. Thus, a total cholesterol reading is not as helpful as knowing the ratio of the so-called good to bad cholesterol

Blood tests are key to determining the levels of good and bad cholesterol in the body. Multiple tests are done to determine the effectiveness of treatment(s), including diet, exercise and medication.

A lipid panel...cholesterol readings... indicates the risk for heart disease or diabetes. There are four components tested...the total cholesterol....the low density cholesterol (LDH) or bad cholesterol...the high density (HDL) or good, cholesterol and the triglycerides. The ratio of the good to bad indicates the risk of developing cardiovascular disease. The triglycerides, if elevated, show the risk of developing diabetes.
