Daphne Du Maurier's works are masterpieces of suspense - which is probably why Alfred Hitchcock chose so many as the inspiration for his films. Rebecca, the story of a young woman whose husband is haunted by the memories of his dead first wife, Rebecca, is a haunting tale. I most enjoy the surprise ending.

I really enjoyed it. I thought of it as a racier version of a gothic novel, such as Jane Eyre or Wuthering Heights. It had the same depth of feeling.

Given the time when it was written, the story is loaded with drama and is riveting. It has a "Jane Eyre" quality that appealed to a lot of people. "Rebecca" is appealing because it rings true about emotions and loyalties and how they are manipulated. It remains DuMaurier's most popular work and is considered a classic.
