There is no pattern. Some of it is history, some of it geography (mountains, rivers, ocean), some of it is common ethnicity.

Country borders are determined by the countries themselves, often through wartime capture. Sometimes they use natural borders (rivers, mountains, etc.) but sometimes they us arbitrary lines for borders.

I think governments make borders around theirs country to proctect the culture of this country. It can be for economics reasons too. They are afraid of theirs neighbours because they think, they can't trust theirs. But in the Europe, between the countries who are in the European Union there is no borders and people are free for travel.
