There are a number of things that could cause low calcium. A Vitamin D deficiency (vitamin D helps to absorb calcium in the body), certain drugs(such as diuretics or antibiotics), and certain types of diets. Health problems that could cause this include renal failure, blood disorders and taking chemotherapy treatments.

The major indication of low calcium intake are muscle cramps and tightness of major muscle groups and even dry skin and cataracts in the eyes. With low calcium, nerve cells, and even bones and teeth are weakened. A drop in calcium absorption is due to too much alcohol intake and not enough vitamin D and magnesium in your systems.

Low calcium in blood levels is called hypocalcaemia. The most common reason for this is due to damage to the parathyroid glands.

Calcium is regulated by the parathyroid glands. It's either a reduction in the hormone (PTH) due to gland damage, or insensitivity of the body tissues to PTH.
