Light spotting can happen at the time of ovulation. We seem to be taught in sex ed that ovulation happens 14 days after the start of our period but the timing of it can actually vary widely. You can chart your temperature using the Fertility Awareness Method to be more aware of when you actually ovulate.

It could be a hormone imbalance or a reaction to the type of birth control you are using. Some types of birth control pills cause spotting until your body adjusts. Products such as Nuva Ring or an IUD can also cause spotting. If you are having urinary pain, it could be a bladder infection. Ask your doctor to be sure.

While I'm not a doctor, I am a woman and have experienced this very situation. If you have low estrogen levels, your uterine lining will begin to shed. Your hormones should be checked by your doctor to ensure that there is not something more serious going on.

If you are on the pill and didn't take the pill near the same time each day, or missed a day. Might be a light period this time.

Without knowing your age, if or what you take for birth control I can't give a definitive answer. Some birth control will have light spotting between periods. If you are in your mid-30's and up you could be pre-menopausal which would do the same. If it happens again next month or gets worse call your doctor.
