What could be causing the clunking noise I hear when braking?

Most likely, your brake pads are warn and the metal underneath are being rubbed. You need to have your brakes checked and probably replaced.

It sounds like your brake pads need to be changed as soon as possible. The brake pads will make that clunking noise as they wear down further. Anymore and they will start grinding against the brake cylinders, which will result in even costly repairs. Brake pads are significantly cheaper in comparison to repairing a cylinder.

There are worn steering system components: Inspect steering system and replace worn parts as required. The suspension system is loose or worn: Inspect suspension system and replace worn parts as required. The disc brake caliper is not mounted properly: Repair or replace mounting hardware as required. Some of the brake hardware is damaged or missing: Replace disk pad mounting hardware.

This sounds like your brake pads need to be replaced. They are worn out or you have gotten a bad pair and they are not working properly. Take your front tire off and check the pads to see if they are cracked or worn.
