The problem is usually a simple one which means that the shift cable wasn`t adjusted properly. When not adjusted properly, the car could have gotten stuck in any gear. Instead of calling a tow truck you may call the person who replaced it and he could come to you.

The transmission fluid level could be off causing it to shift at the wrong time. Also make sure the transmission is securely fastened under the car. My friend had a problem with his transmission mount and that definitely caused poor shifting until it was fixed.

Your linkage could be having problems, this is more than common enough, I had it happen to me with my Chevrolet Silverado.
