Question by  LES (14)

What could be causing my 18 month old to be crying excessively at bed time?

Over the past few days my toddler has started to cry uncontrollably at bed time, could he be sick or is it separation issues?

Chances are it is seperation anxiety. Especially if your child is used to spending alot of time with you during the day. At bedtime you are laying him down and leaving the room, and he probably doesn't like the idea of being seperated from you. Alot of children go through this phase at bedtimes.

It is very common for 18 month olds to have seperation issues, try spending more time with him or her while in the room, assure them that you are right next door and make sure they know you are not leaving. Also make sure that he is not afraid of the dark.

It could be that he is afraid to be alone in the dark. Take his temperature to see if he's sick.

There are a number of things that could be causing this such as teething. It could also be a change in the bedtime routine or nightligt issues. Try rubbing their back or head for comfort until he/she falls asleep.
