This sounds like something I have called dermagraphia. It's a mild autoimmune condition where friction actually causes red, raised, itchy welts or hives. Mine started after a vaccine I received in my mid 20s.

These welts could be caused by an allergic reaction to foods or environmental things that you are allergic to. They are possibly hives or they are from mosquito bites, or fleas, or something of that nature. They could also be caused by a allergic reaction to soaps, or lotions, or perfumes applied to the skin.

welts are usually caused because of excess moisture in skin or because of allergy but sometimes it's even caused by using some cosmetics which doesn't suit to your skin. When the skin is such a condition is scratched with nails your welts become more painful and looks more visible.

Welts can be caused by any number of things. In the case of you itching its possibly due to an allergen you might have been exposed to. another possibility is that it is a reaction to the itching it self, it may be that your body created the welt to relive pressure on the skin.
