It's a natural depression or hole in earth surfaces caused by a process called karst processes (the chemical dissolutions of carbonate rocks or suffosion processes). Erosion plays a major factor which results in it forming.
Sinkholes are caused by cavities of underground water being depleted by one mean or another, leaving behind an empty chamber which collapses onto itself causing a sinkhole.
