Our skin color depends on the melanin distribution in our skin. The melanin is what gives a suntan from sun exposure. Different conditions can change our normal skin color. Medical problems, side effects of medications and vertiligo can change our skin color at any time in life. Also a liver abnormality can make skin yellowish.

Coloration of the skin is caused by melanin. Melanocytes in our skin produce melanin to protect our skin from the harsh effects of the sun. An increased amount of melanin is what allows us to tan.

Coloration of the skin is a combination of reaction to the environment and genetics. Tanning is caused by melanin production, which occurs in response to exposure to ultraviolet light (sunlight, tanning beds, et cetera). Also, injury or damage (for example wounds or acne) can cause irritation which leads to a reddish color.

Pigmentation of the skin can be caused by several factors. One such cause can be the sun, which causes sunspots.
