However, if the itching is persistent and not cleared up by over-the-counter creams designed for anal use, see your doctor - there may be a fungal infection.

A number of things can cause anal itching, some of which are serious and others of which are not very serious at all. A probable cause is hemmorhoids, which are generally not very serious. You'll want to consult a doctor, however, in case you have anal warts.
