What can you tell me about the Catholic Church and altar servers?

Today, servers can be male or female, though most are male. Generally, servers are school kids who volunteer their services. Servers assist the officiant during Mass.

Earlier, the Catholic Church believed all boys belonged to them and should be groomed to become priests, they served as Alter Boys to further their education in mass and Latin prayer. Now Alter Boys (servers) are considered part of the congrigation, but are still use to assist the priet on the alter.
