It affects skin of the head and torso. Inflammation of the sebaceous glands is usually chronic in these areas which are prone to redness and flaking. It is theorized that yeast may be a factor in causing this disorder but this hasn't been proven. More men than women tend to suffer this disorder.

The exact cause of seborrhoeic dermatitis remains unclear, but the most promising evidence links it to a type of yeast that lives on the surface of the skin. The symptoms like flaking and scaling usually occur on the face and neck. Treatments include topical ointments, topical steroids, and an anti-fungal.
