All bits are fitted snugly enough to form one to two small wrinkles at the corner of the mouth. The buckles on the headstall allows this adjustment.

You can take the end of a wooden spoon handle and make a mark where the horses mouth ends. Measure that and then you get the bit length.

The western bit needs to be wide enough for your horse's mouth (not pinching from being too tight/ narrow,) and you need to see one wrinkle at the corner of the mouth as the bit hangs in the horse's mouth. Have your horse checked to make sure they do not have a low palate- this causes pain in ported bits.

The easiest way to do this is to measure your horse's mouth across the back, toothless portion, then take this to the shop where you buy your tack and things.
