Keep it simple. The trombone can be a bit unweildy when you begin to use is. Give your son constant positive feedback and let him know he will get better and better the more he practices. Keep his lessons simple. Get him comfortable handling the trombone first.

A great trombone is the Bach TB300 (I think it's TB301 now) and the Yamaha YSL-354. Both of these are considered "pea-shooters." If you want something that will last through middle school, I suggest you buy a trombone with an F attachment. Considered an intermediate trombone by some people, both Bach and Yamaha make excellent trombones with F attachments.

The best advice that can be given about buying a trombone would be to visit your local music store and see if they have any trombones and possibly used ones.

Refrain from buying the instrument until you are sure that your son is actually likely to learn to play it. Lease it.

You should take your son to your local music store so that he can try a few out, then price check around.
