I haven't had them on my hip but I have them in my left shoulder. I was told I had better get surgery to remove them because eventually I won't be able to lift my arm up past my waist. It already has messed up my daily routine.

You could try pain therapy. In addition to anti-inflammatories there are also gels and patches that are available in prescription form that are non-narcotic and non-addictive that can help you a great deal while you are decided whether or not to have the surgery. Wish you well!

Physical therapy is the first step for treatment of bone spurs. It can start out of 3 visits a week and combines exercises with ultrasound and electrotherapy. Physicians will work out a treatment plan which will be best suited to each individuals need depending on severity and complexity of problem.
