Natural remedies are better for tree. "Tanglefoot" is a sticky substance that they will not travel across. Concoct a mixture of juiced citrus, such as lemon, and spray leaves and trunk. Teatree oil and grapefruit seed mixed with water and sprayed around trunk is effective, also.

When you find ants living in trees, kill the ants with a store bought pesticide by following the directions on the bottle. Then take tar and fill the gap where the ants were found. This will help the tree to heal.
