Small pieces of twist ties make a great counter for my yarn projects. I have also been known to use hair barrettes of my daughters when I am in a desperate situation. I suppose depending on how creative you want to get you can tie loose pieces of yarn in loops that can be cut off later to also work.

Any thin, smooth loop will work for this. The loop can be made of yarn, twist ties, rubber bands, plastic, etc. You just want to select something that won't snag your knitting and moves along the needle as you are knitting. Loops of yarn are the easiest and cheapest.

The easiest and least expensive method for making a knitting place marker is to tie a loop on the needle from a piece of yarn that is a different color than the yarn you are knitting with. Don't tie the loop super tight, you need to move it back and forth when you get to it without knitting it.

Oddly enough, the thing you get on the end of a loaf of bread to keep it closed (not the twist tie, the plastic thing) works great.

If you don't want to buy the small rings made for this, you can use small safety pins, bobby pins or hinged binder rings. Color coded filing dots (found in office supply stores) can work but are easily knocked off your work.

You can use a small bit of a different color yarn or a small safty pin. You can also buy a small plastic ring.
