What can I purchase and what can I not purchase with food stamps?

Do I ever have to pay back the money or save receipts on what I bought with food stamps?

You cannot buy non-food items (beer, deodorant, laundry soap, pet food, first aid supplies, school supplies) or cooked food (from the deli section or cafe). The system records what you bought, should there be an issue. The only money that is to be paid back is in prosecuted cases of fraud requiring restitution.

The system is set up to not allow certain purchases, including alcohol/tobacco products, cleaning products, medicines, pet food/supplies, deli food, fast food, etc.

You cannot spend money on non-food items, vitamins or medication. You do not need to save receipts or pay any of the money back.

If you have a food stamp debit card, you do not have to save receipts. The cash register system of the grocery store will flag unallowed items. You can buy food as long as it is not pre-prepared (like at a restaurant). You cannot buy cleaning supplies, diapers, cigarettes, beer or gum.
